For the first time, Asia will consume half of the world's electricity alone by 2025, while Africa will continue to consume much less of its share from the rest of the world's population.
This was among the new estimates released Thursday by the International Energy Agency.
The Paris-based organization said that most of Asia's electricity consumption is in China, with a population of 1.4 billion, and its share of global consumption will increase from a quarter in 2015 to a third by the mid-2020s.
Sadamoto Sadamori, head of energy and security markets at the agency, said: "China will consume more electricity than the European Union, the United States, and India combined."
In contrast, Africa, which accounts for about five percent of the world's population, will only form three percent of global electricity consumption in 2025.
Sadamori said: "In addition to rapid population growth, this means there is still a great need to increase electricity production in Africa."
In the annual report of the International Energy Agency, an increase is expected in inputs from renewable energy sources such as nuclear energy and sources such as wind energy and solar energy in global electricity supplies over the next three years, it is indicated. Until this prevents a large increase in emissions of greenhouse gases from the energy sector.
